Your Gut Health Matters More Than You Think
By Grateful Ogunjebe
Gut health is central to overall wellbeing, influencing digestion, immunity, energy, and mental health. Everyday habits like poor diet, irregular meals, stress, and inadequate sleep can disrupt gut bacteria and digestive efficiency, leading to bloating, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, and fatigue.
The gut–brain connection means stress and sleep affect digestion, which in turn can impact mood and concentration. Small, consistent changes to diet, hydration, and lifestyle can quickly improve digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function, showing that a healthy gut supports overall wellness.
Research highlights that low-fiber, high-sugar diets harm gut microbiota. Gradually increasing fiber, staying hydrated, eating balanced meals, managing stress, and sleeping well promote beneficial bacteria, reduce inflammation, and prevent chronic digestive issues.
Dr Flourish Ogunjebe, Acupuncturist and Functional Medicine practitioner, said, “From both a lifestyle and holistic health perspective, a highly processed diet, chronic stress, and irregular sleep or meal patterns are the most common factors that disrupt gut health. Correcting them doesn’t require extreme measures — small, consistent changes can yield noticeable improvements within weeks.”
From a nutrition standpoint, Becky Uwaigbe, a registered dietitian, notes that dietary changes are the most effective and sustainable way to support gut health. In her clinical experience, clients often struggle with bloating, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, or IBS-related discomfort, sometimes accompanied by fatigue or mood fluctuations. She advises:
- Gradual increase in fiber intake through vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Fiber should be increased slowly and paired with hydration to prevent bloating.
- Reduction of processed foods and added sugars that disrupt gut microbiota balance.
- Incorporation of probiotic-rich foods like yogurt with live cultures or fermented vegetables.
- Inclusion of prebiotic foods such as onions, garlic, bananas, oats, and beans to nourish beneficial bacteria.
- Mindful eating and regular meal patterns to support digestion and reduce discomfort.
Dr Oke Victoria, a general medicine practitioner, explains that gut health is a vital indicator of overall medical wellbeing. She highlights that imbalances in the gut can influence immune function, inflammation, and even hormone regulation, affecting multiple body systems beyond digestion. Doctors often view gut symptoms as potential early signs of infections, autoimmune conditions, or other underlying medical issues that require attention.
She adds that gut disturbances can also manifest in unexpected ways, such as fatigue, sleep problems, or mood changes. By assessing these symptoms alongside other clinical signs, physicians can better understand a patient’s overall health and intervene early when imbalances or disease processes are detected, emphasizing that gut health is a crucial part of comprehensive medical care.
An interviewee also said, “I used to feel very uncomfortable and sleepy after meals. When I started paying attention to my diet — adding more fruits and vegetables, drinking more water, and reducing late-night eating — I noticed less bloating and more regular bowel movements within a few weeks. It wasn’t instant, but consistency made a big difference.”
She also highlights broader benefits of maintaining gut health, noting that it can lead to feeling lighter and more energized throughout the day, enhanced mental clarity and improved ability to concentrate, as well as better overall wellbeing and greater resilience to digestive discomfort.
Taken together, the insights from clinical research, lifestyle practitioners, and lived experience demonstrate that gut health can be significantly improved through simple, consistent, and realistic adjustments. Small, sustainable changes in diet, hydration, stress management, and sleep form the foundation of a healthy digestive system, ultimately supporting overall health, energy, and quality of life.
